In an unlikely turn of events which both surprised and delighted me, I won an award a couple of years ago for my review of a top class Asian restaurant at the prestigious Golden Chopsticks Awards fronted by TV personalty, author, DJ extrordinaire and all round nice guy, Gok Wan MBE, who is passionate about raising the profile of those in the business of creating amazing Asian food from suppliers to food critics, not forgetting the restauranteurs themselves of course. I might have mentioned it a few times.
Now you have the opportunity to snatch the last few tickets remaining for a very intimate dinner and conversation on Tuesday April 18th, 2023 with two national treasures -chef, broadcaster and author Ken Hom CBE and Gok Wan.
Gok and Ken have become firm friends since they started working together on The Golden Chopsticks Awards 5 years ago. Anyone who has seen them on stage together will feel their chemistry.
The evening will consist of dinner and conversation for only 100 people at a Golden Chopsticks Awards winning restaurant, Din Tai Fung.
This is a unique opportunity to hear stories from Gok and Ken's past, and to ask them any burning questions you may have. Gok alone will keep you riveted (and in stitches at a guess if my experiences with him are anything to go by) and who would NOT want to have dinner with a celebrated world famous chef?
The event is being held to launch the Golden Chopsticks Scholarship, offered by the Oxford Cultural Collective, which will provide transformative learning for young people who are building their careers in the UK’s Asian restaurant sector. All proceeds will go toward the Golden Chopsticks Scholarship.
The conversation will take place after the drinks reception with chat between courses and audience members will have the chance to ask questions of Ken and Gok.
Ken Hom commented: “This is set to be a very special, memorable evening. We’ll be sharing stories and enjoying excellent food and wine together in a beautiful location. It’s definitely not one to be missed. You’ll be joining Gok and me to launch the Golden Chopsticks Scholarship from the Oxford Cultural Collective. This is your opportunity to support young people who are working in fabulous Asian restaurants across the UK, who are often overlooked when it comes to mainstream education and training.”
So, where will this amazing event be held?
Din Tai Fung, Centre Point
Set at the base of Centre Point, Din Tai Fung is a stunning venue for this dinner with Ken Hom and Gok Wan. The company’s newest location is a marriage of an iconic location with a brand history spanning over 60 years.
The Chinese feast will feature Din Tai Fung’s renowned Xia Long Bao – the pinnacle of culinary craftsmanship – individual dumplings that are delicately rolled and meticulously prepared with exactly 18 folds.
The restaurant group, which has won many awards and enjoys an international celebrity following, received a boost back in 1993, when Ken Hom wrote an article in the New York Times, in which he praised them as one of his favourite places to eat. A copy of that article is still displayed at the entrance to every branch of Din Tai Fung.
The price of this must-do event for passionate foodies is £150 pp, to include baijiu cocktail and canapé reception, a spectacular Chinese feast and wine. I'm happy to go as someone's plus one if you are offering....
