#magicmoments A Promise

Brownie promise

My baby girl, just days out of cruising shoes and nappies it seems to me. Standing proud in her too-big uniform with plenty of room to grow left,  although I wish she wouldn't. Ready and waiting - she knows the words, she's practiced and practiced.

It's time. She takes her place on the carefully cut circle of carpet. A scarp of carpet which symbolises the start of an important journey. An older friend joins her, supports her. Words I remember from my childhood ring out loud and clear.

I smile, a little choked. My daughter steps out alone on this carpet pathway, heading for a new chapter in her life. She's pictured here, searching for her promise badge and once found, progresses to make her Brownie promise. She's so proud - the first in her pack to say the new words.

She holds up her fingers in a careful salute to her leader, takes her trefoil badge and turns towards us, the couple who created her with love- and smiles. A special smile for mummy and daddy. A joyous smile which lights up her whole face - the smile we first saw before she had her long golden locks, her voice and the ability to walk alone. I'm so glad we were able to be there to support her.

I hope I'm around to see and support her in many, many more important and magic moments in her life and make sure she always remembers to be true to herself.

I promise that I will do my best:
To be true to myself and develop my beliefs,
To serve the Queen and my community,
To help other people
and
To keep the Brownie Guide Law.
