Fun Features for your Family Living Room

It's taken years for me to be happy with my living room but finally after years of catastrophic sofa and curtain choices I am finally content with the granny/shabby chic look I love so much, albeit with a big TV and wifi controlled lighting and music alongside the vintage phone.

Did you know that the living room is the most used space in the home? Just think about it for a second; it is an entertainment hub for the entire household.

However, you don’t have to sit there all day watching television, because there are so many other interesting things you and your family can enjoy in the living room. Here are some fun features for this special room that will enhance your space.

Indoor water features

I'd love a water feature in my living room! Installing an indoor water fountain will make your living room feel tranquil and calm. When you have seven children, making the most of a little peace and quiet is essential!

The noise of the fountain is like a natural waterfall in your home. It’s a great way of bringing the outdoors into your home. It makes a great background sound if you are practising meditation or yoga at the end of the day. This unusual feature is quirky and fun, and will definitely be a talking point when you have family and friends over.

A restful reading nook

If you are a fan of fiction, or obsessed with autobiographies, a little reading nook is a great feature in your living room. I have a cosy chair with a lamp behind for my spot.

You could place bookshelves in one corner of your living room and then fill the floor space with cushions, bean bags and blankets. This cosy corner will delight children and adults alike.

If you are lucky enough to have low and wide window sills in your living room - wide enough to sit on - this will also make a great reading nook. With cushions to sit on, a book in one hand and a cup of hot tea in the other, you can be content reading, and watching the world go by.

Personalised wallpaper

Feature wallpaper is still very much on trend for the living room with styles to suit both modern and classic home styles.

Even better  than choosing off the shelf styles is the option to personalise wallpaper. There are many companies that offer the service of creating wallpaper murals using your photographs. What better way to celebrate your family, than using your treasured pictures to create a collage of all your memories.

Alternatively, how about using a photo of your favourite holiday destination, be it The Maldives, or Wells-Next-The-Sea.. It is a chance to put something that is truly meaningful on the walls of your living space. I already have an image of the grapevine covered seating area of my favourite taverna in Cyprus on my bank card - it would be awesome to have it recreated on a wall.

Your living room doesn’t have to be all beige and neutral colours. With a little imagination you can create a personal and interesting space that your whole family will love to spend time together in.
