New Scientist Live 2018 at ExCel

The weather is supposed to be a bit rubbish for the next few days so if you are looking for something interesting to do or somewhere to take the kids I have great news for you. The New Scientist Live event is on at London's ExCel until Sunday evening and it is FANTASTIC!

I'll be honest, I never thought it would be a great destination for children but this show has something to educate and entertain pretty much the entire family.

During my visit today I saw kids competing in slime olympics, testing the latest virtual reality tech and enjoying a magic show with energy as its theme.

I was wowed by a very clever T-shirt from Curiscope which, when teamed with an app, brings learning to life by giving you a graphic and fascinating tour of "your" insides.  Available in blue and black in all sizes from child sized upwards I reckon this T-shirt will prove a real hit with science geeks and teachers alike.

I didn't expect to find jewellery at New Scientist Live but I loved the work of Emily Alice Molecule Jewellery which takes molecular structure and makes it wearable. From Serotonin to caffeine you can choose earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and cuff links all made in quality materials.

Making use of discarded non-recyclable plastic retrieved from the sea by Plastic Oceanic for jewellery, coasters, keyring and more is inspired. Funds from items sold by the Cornwall-based company goes back into cleaning up more of the ocean.

Finally in my quick round up I must mention the very lovely guys from Dekko Comics. My children love comics so this is a great way for them to learn about science, maths, geography, English, history and other topics from the KS2 curriculum (aged 9-12)  in a format they appreciate and that isn't screen-based. If you DO go to New Scientist Live this weekend pop along to their stand and get a special show discount to start you off. Subscriptions are available for schools and home readers.

There was so much more to see and some very adulty more science-y science and some fascinating talks scheduled for those who understand such things, and I could go on about it all for much longer but I want to get this published as fast as possible to give you chance to book tickets to New Scientist Live  before they completely sell out.
