Approaching 1 Year of being a Grandma

I was so excited to learn I was going to be a Grandma. Obviously with seven children it was fairly likely I'd end up with at least one eventually but still it was a lovely surprise and I crocheted blankets and counted the days until he arrived last October.

Now becoming a Grandma is a little bit like becoming a mum. You cannot describe the feeling of overwhelming love for a wrinkled wailing bundle until you have held your grandchild in your arms. Well that's how it was for me. So much like the emotion of holding my own babies without the after effects of pregnancy or the prospect of sore boobs, disturbed nights and poonami nappies.

This year has flown by for us. Because our beloved Grandson lives quite a way away and his birth coincided with astronomic road fuel prices and the cost of living crisis we have not seen him as often as we'd like.

Don't get me wrong, my son and his lovely partner have made multiple trips to see us and we've been down there a few times too but I envy those grandparents who get to see their adored grandchildren multiple times a week or even every day!

Thank goodness for the internet which means Baby B thinks he has two grandmas - the tiny one who appears on Daddy's phone regularly and the big (slightly scary) one who has cats and vegan Magnums in the fridge. The Magnums are in the fridge, not the cats. Stay with me.

I love that his little face lights up when I FaceTime and will even get up early when they visit so I don't miss a minute with him. I'm a dedicated thrifter and I'm always keeping an eye out for clothes or toys for my little man.

His Dad's siblings adore him too and there's always someone around to entertain him. As an aside, we struggled how we should refer to our non-binary child as for him. They are neither aunt nor uncle of course. An internet search suggested combining Aunty and Uncle -Auncle or Unty- but we didn't like that so we've gone with comrade M. Any other suggestions welcome.

For his birthday his parents have planned a day out near us with a little party. My teen baker is making a smash cake for him and I cannot wait to see him tackle that - camera at the ready.

I'm hoping that soon he will be able to call me Grandma, or some variant of that. In the meantime I will make the most of hugs and sloppy kisses.

Love you B.
