3 Things You'll Need To Create A Safe Space For Kids In Your Garden

When you’re a kid, the garden can be the most fun room in the whole house! There’s so much to discover out there, as well as plenty of space to play - what’s not to like about it?!

When you’re an adult - and most importantly, a parent - you can see a lot of things not to like about it! Indeed, the garden can feel like a real hazard. If you’re not out there with them, supervising over a fun summer BBQ or having a brew on the patio, it might feel like you’re putting them at risk.

But we’ve got the ideas that’ll stop you worrying. If you want your kids to spend more time outside, here’s what to do to ensure the garden is a perfectly safe space.

A Good Bit of Lawn

Kids need some flat surface to run around on, without the risk of tripping. This is where a good sized lawn really comes into its own.

Not only is there plenty of space for them to play their make-believe games, but if they do fall down, it’s onto grass and soil. All that will really do is leave grass stains, and that doesn’t hurt anything other than your laundry cycle!

Check if there’s any way you can increase the size of the lawn in your garden. Could you move back some planter beds, or rearrange your flower boxes? Or maybe you could sow some grass seeds on that disused side of the garden, where a bunch of old stones and cut offs have been put into a pile?

Set Up a Deck Railing

Having a balustrade installed around a deck means it’s far less likely someone is going to trip and fall off the deck, accidentally be pushed off of it, or go careening into the side edge and collapse in pain.

Sure, if the kids are running around and not looking, they might still bump their head off of the glass. This is nowhere near as bad as ramming into a smaller and sharper bit of wood though!

A Locked Shed

A shed that you can lock is a parent’s best friend in the garden. You can put all the dangerous tools and solutions inside it, lock the door behind you, and ensure the kids don’t have any access at all.

Now no one has the chance to step on a tool and have the handle bump them in the face, or risk their fingertips by trying to play with the lawn mower!

If you’ve got a shed that you can sort of lock, but it’s the kind of little wood stump that anyone can twist, you might want to get a proper lock installed. Other than that, you can just simply  invest in a new shed unit

Let’s get the kids outside. Making your garden a bit safer for the kids isn’t too difficult to do, which is very good news for any parents that don’t have plans for the summer!
