There’s nothing worse than checking your bank balance and realising all your utility providers have just taken their massive chunk out for the month. It always feels like you’re paying so much more than you were this time last year (even though you swear you've not changed a single thing about how you live!) and there’s always something going on in the world to mess up the economy.
People always give the exact same tired advice about wearing a thick jumper or turning the big light off when you leave a room to save on things like electricity bills but that really doesn't make a dent when the standing charges are so incredibly high. While investing in solar power is an obvious choice, there are some smaller things you can do too. You just need to look a bit deeper at how your house actually runs and where the money is secretly leaking out.
Sort out your boiler flow temperature
Everyone talks about turning down the main thermostat but they completely ignore the actual boiler itself which is where the real savings happen. If you have a combi boiler it is probably set to heat the water going to your radiators to about eighty degrees which is completely unnecessary and wastes so much gas before the house even feels warm. You can manually turn that flow temperature down to sixty degrees or even less and your house will still get perfectly warm but your boiler will actually run in condensing mode which makes it incredibly efficient and saves you a decent chunk of money every single month. It takes about two minutes to twist the little dial on the front of the machine. It is the easiest win you can possibly get.
Audit those sneaky direct debits
This is the exact place where so many of us bleed money without even realising it. We’ve all signed up for a free trial of things that we thought we needed and then just totally forget all about it (while they happily take nine quid a month from your account for the rest of eternity). Go through your bank statements right now and cancel absolutely everything you don't use on a weekly basis. You cant complain about your internet and electric bills being too high if you are still paying for a gym membership you haven't used since 2024 and a random premium delivery pass for a shop you completely hate.
Check your insulation gaps
You probably already have loft insulation but the government rules changed recently and what was acceptable ten years ago is now considered way too thin. You don't need to rip it all out and start again because you can literally just buy a few extra rolls from the hardware store and lay them directly over the top of the old stuff to trap the heat inside where it belongs.
